A matricial computation of rational quadrature formulas on the unit circle

A matricial computation of quadrature formulas for orthogonal rational functions on the unit circle, is presented in this paper. The nodes of these quadrature formulas are the zeros of the para-orthogonal rational functions with poles in the exterior of the unit circle and the weights are given by the corresponding Christoffel numbers. We show how these nodes can be obtained as the eigenvalues of the operator Möbius transformations of Hessenberg matrices and also as the eigenvalues of the operator Möbius transformations of five-diagonal matrices, recently obtained. We illustrate the preceding results with some numerical examples.     

Synthesis of an AIE-active fluorogen and its application in cell imaging

A fluorogen named 1-decyl-1-methyl-2,5-bis{4-[(N,N-diethylamino)methyl]phenyl}-3,4-diphenylsilole (3) was synthesized. It emitted weakly as isolated molecule but strongly as supramolecular aggregate, showing a characteristic behavior of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The molecules of 3 formed highly emissive nanoparticles in aqueous media, which quickly and selectively marked cytoplasm of HeLa cells and posed no toxicity to the living cells. The fluorogen is thus a promising candidate material for cell imaging as a sensitive, selective and cytocompatible biosensor. 淮安市食管鳞癌患者血清~1 H NMR波谱初步研究

测试了30例正常人血清和60例淮安市食管鳞癌患者血清的氢核磁共振波谱.观察到正常人血清的共振峰主要集中在化学位移δH(ppm)1.00 ～5.00,构建了正常人血清的~1H NMR指纹图谱.同时将食管鳞癌患者血清1H NMR与正常人血清~1H NMR进行比较,发现食管鳞癌患者与正常人血清样品在δ_H 1.0 ～1.2 和δ_H 3.0 ～3.8(如δH 3.25、3.23、3.36、3.41、3.43)存在一定的差异波峰,即食管鳞癌的可能特征峰.表明借助于1H NMR特征峰有助于食管鳞癌的早期诊断.     

Tafel slopes from first principles

Tafel slopes for multistep electrochemical reactions are derived from first principles. The derivation takes place in two stages. First, Dirac’s perturbation theory is used to solve the Schrödinger equation. Second, current–voltage curves are obtained by integrating the single-state results over the full density of states in electrolyte solutions. Thermal equilibrium is assumed throughout. Somewhat surprisingly, it is found that the symmetry factor that appears in the Butler–Volmer equation is different from the symmetry factor that appears in electron transfer theory, and a conversion formula is given. Finally, the Tafel slopes are compiled in a convenient look-up table.     

Lysophosphatidylglycerol inhibits formyl peptide receptor like-1-stimulated chemotactic migration and IL-1�� production from human phagocytes

In this study, we observed that lysophosphatidylglycerol (LPG) completely inhibited a formyl peptide receptor like-1 (FPRL1) agonist (MMK-1)-stimulated chemotactic migration in human phagocytes, such as neutrophils and monocytes. LPG also dramatically inhibited IL-1β production by another FPRL1 agonist serum amyloid A (SAA) in human phagocytes. However, LPG itself induced intracellular calcium increase and superoxide anion production in human phagocytes. Keeping in mind that phagocytes migration and IL-1β production by FPRL1 are important for the induction of inflammatory response, our data suggest that LPG can be regarded as a useful material for the modulation of inflammatory response induced by FPRL1 activation.     

Online analysis of products from a direct ethanol fuel cell

Methodology for the online analysis of the main products from a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) has been developed. The liquid exhaust from the fuel cell is first passed through a conductivity cell to determine the concentration of acetic acid and then CO₂ is extracted into a nitrogen stream for determination with a flow-through infrared-based CO₂ sensor. The other major product, acetaldehyde can be obtained by difference from the current. The continuous measurement of these products allows monitoring of changes in product distributions with time and operating conditions, resulting in a simple online system for rapid evaluation of anode catalysts in DEFCs.
